Anyone else have a gps? Just thinking that adding a GPS element to games might be fun. Maybe like a downed aircraft scenario. Team 1 Has a gps co-ordinate where a plane has gone down, team 2 (crash survivors) have a rally point to get to. Team 1 has to find the down plane to get intel to the survivors are headed. Anyone want to expand on this idea?

Ok expansion to idea #1. Team 2 kicked a weapons cache off the plane to lighten it but crashed anyway, and their first objective is to recover it. (First rally point.) Maybe only have a pistol or two till they find their weapons cache. Team 1 has plane location but has to find crash site to figure out where the whepons cache is. Once both teams are armed then its a race to a given point which whomever the first team to arrive wins the objective.

Sounds like a good idea. I have a rino but hadn't planned on bringing it. What do you use for topo maps?

I have some really detailed topo maps that were given to me by a friend in forestry. but all I was going to use was my Garmin Nuvi 255 and or my boys (old) Magellon eXplorist 200. If u want a copy of the topo Cd's let me know and I'll burn them 4 u.

I have the Garmin topo maps for Canada but have found some errors in my area already. The Rino got lost on my drive to work, when I stuck to the main road all the way to the dam, it lost the way somewhere around the turn off at Hudson's Hope. Smile If the ones you have are more accurate I'd love to get a copy. Let me know how much I owe you so I can bring cash for the cd's.

I've got an early model Magellan and an old Garmin. Neither hold topo, but can enter waypoints and navigate to them. No fancy features, but do the basics of 'You are here, and you need to go that-a-way'. That and a map is still a hundred times better than a compass and pacing.

I've used 'em for work for years, and for some geo-caching long ago.

Oh cool! Did you know there are like a shoitload of geocaches here in town? An older gps is fine as long as u can input a lat and long.

Yeah, when I first Geo-cached, there were about three caches here.
I can enter lat/long, but I found that UTM is more intuitive to me. Plus it is easier to calculate distances.

UTM? I have a vehicle gps but it can be used for entering co-ordinates and leading you to a cache. My kid also has an older style but his can make a trail to follow back on.

UTM= Universal Transverse Mercator. Very easy to use once it is understood. It is all meters north of the equator and meters east of an invisible reference line. It can be very confusing if you are travelling east-west or west-east over 100's of km, but for a small area like Busters it can be used easily. If you have 2 coordinates, you can calculate the distance (in meters) between them, and if you are clever with trig, you can even calulate the bearing to take!

I played with mapsource and figured out how to load topo maps onto my Garmin Nuvi 255. It works awesome! The regular streets are still navigable and many more of the bush roads show up as well as the lakes and elevation lines! Sweet!!!!

Sorry for the confusing post, I didn't lose my gps. I meant that my GPS lost it's way to my destination. I entered my destination into the GPS and it directed me as I drove and it lost it's way at the turnoff from HH to the dam. It had me off route, even though I stayed on the main road all the way to the dam.
