Just so you guys are aware, there is no such thing as "gear timing" in an AEG (there are 3 exceptions, but they aren't the subject here).

Timing would occur if there were was 2 or more actions that needed to coincide with each other that had adjustability. This is not the case with any standard AEG. You cannot adjust any functions. Once the gears are in, that's it. The very first time you take an AEG full-auto, all actions from nozzle to pinion are set permanently.

Guys have said "take the sector gear to 1 o'clock with the AR latch engaged". It's all crap. I've worked on so many guns over the years that I've lost count long ago and with the exception of the Systema, PSG1 and Type 89, there is no such thing as gear timing.

It's probably the oldest tech myth out there for AEGs.

Thanks for the clarification there Macguyver, Horton actually had proposed the same idea that as long as you had your gears placed in properly that the "timing" so to speak would work itself out, and be the same regardless of where the sector gear was positioned...

Anyways, thanks for letting us know, once again your expertise is greatly appreciated.

I KNEW IT! Woot! Thanks Macguyver.

I wish I had my PSG1 still now that I have the guts to take a look inside.

Interesting vidoe find Jackboot, where is that other one that was going around. It's way shorter and has the C-cans landing and unloading guys in gasmasks. Lots of G36's and Mp5sd action. The pellet gun sniper too.

Phew, I rarely think about anything when I crack my boxes so at least that is one thing more I do not have to worry about Razz

MacGuyver, one issue I do have though is with shimming, how do you shim too much or under shim. The metal shims are so thin that I wonder what difference having one or more in a row makes... Is it to keep the gears tights, or just to provide a smooth low friction surface. I have a variety of thicknesses that I assume keeps the gear tight, but how do you tell it is properly shimmed and the proper tightness?

as far as I under stand you are creating a barrier between the gear box and the gears and also keeping the gears from being to loose or too tight. You are also keeping the gears from being to tight agianst each other as well as the gear box.

To loose and they wear down from extra side to side movement. Too tight and they wear from stress extra work. When I did Smiths P90 I had to replace the stock shims with thinner ones in one gear and put thicker ones in others. I don't know if my system works but I do the bushings then put the box together with just the gears and the reversal latch. Push the gear nubs that stick out the sides back and forth to find out where the play is or where they are too tight then shim accordingly. Spin the gears to see if they are spinning freely or not.

After replacing a broken tappet plate, I'm having some big problems with my gun. In semi-auto, everytime I pull the trigger back, it locks all the way back until I switch to safe. Then the trigger pops back to the forward position. (All of this happens without a shot being fired, or even any noise.) If I put the selector switch even a little behind semi, it shoots in full auto.

Anyone know whats wrong?

Did you play with the fire selector at all? Or possibly the safety? Its the little black thing that moves back and forth at the front of your mechbox...

I don't think I did anything to affect those, but I'll have to open it up later to check.

Jackboot - There's a tab cast out from the mechbox shell directly behind the switch. It's called a switch stop block. It prevents the switch contact block from being pulled back by the spring and becoming dislodged. If this is broken (happens once in a while), then your switch contact block can become dislodged and cause this problem. But it doesn't always reset itself. You likely are going to have to open up the mechbox and take a look. Also, look at the physical junction between the trigger, switch and semi-auto cut-off bar to ensure that there is no excessice wear and that pieces are in the correct positions (especially the trigger).

As far as shimming goes, I start with the spur gear first. I take a guesstimate of what shim to start with. Then I shim the sector gear to mesh with the spur gear, then the bevel gear last. Then I out the mechbox shell together and scre it together (bottom group of screws is sufficient). Next I shim the the right side of the gears, based on what I saw with gear play when the shell was tightened. All of this is done without the spring and cylinder components (for ease of work). Then, when I think I've got it, I try to spin the gears with my finger. If it's too tight, I repeat the last procedure. Too loose, I repeat the last procedure until I get it just right.

There'sno magic to it, just some patience and a little effort. And a good supply of shims also helps. Sometimes one package is not enough, depending how many 0.1 mm shims you need.

Jack, by any chance did you remove you selector switch. I had to replace mine becuase the D shape became O on the round inside peice. It meant that safe became semi, semi became safe, and full-auto became semi.

Bored nightshift time killing thread. - Page 2 G-10-024-L

It is a quick fix if this is the case. My body was too tight and caused the selector switch to have too much friction and bend, thus not aligning properly. Check it out just in case.

I didn't remove anything I didn't need to when I replaced the tappet plate, so I don't think that would be the problem.
I might open it up tonight, and I'll post what I find tomorrow.

Haha, I found one thing wrong with it... The anti-reversal latch wasn't in place. I didn't see anything else wrong with it, and I don't think this would explain the trigger locking back, though.

Ha ha ha, yeah, that aired a year ago and my Dad came screaming into my room saying OMG!!! You have to see this!!!

I love his face getting sucked back. Shame this is unable to be driven in Canada due to the restrictions on non-engineered checked bumpers. If someone did get the test done, $100,000 dollars, then yeah, we could get them... What a shame.... if only someone...

12 mins before fuels runs out
