Okay, just to clearify things again, I didn't say anything about a direct hit, as we have tested wire head on by an upgraded rifle and it was fine...

We need to stop with the direct hit thing because we have tested it and it was fine! What I think we need to think about is the fragments....

As for the ANSI/paintball rated stuff, aren't there glasses (ie. I know Oakley makes a few glasses with ANSI ratings) that have these ratings? I think that it's quite harsh to say this, at this time because we haven't even had all the guys who use wire say much. I think we need to let everyone have their say and then decide what we should do from there...

I'm just saying that we should stay on the safe side and stick with ANSI/paintball rated and sealed eyewear. Freak accidents do happen.

I know that there are ballistic glasses, which is why I said properly rated, and sealed goggles.

Hey man I agree with you, I'm just saying instead of just saying that we ban them, letting everyone voice their opinon and then we'll agree on something.

But I understand that it is your opinon that you say ban them, and I'm just setting things clear, as it's useless to say the same things over and over. It's been said once, we're all set...

Thought I would bring up a couple points.
first when we tested the mesh gogles at my place with frags gas sniper it nocked some paint off of the goggles, that paint would have gone straight into the face of who ever was wearing them. also a little bit of paint or plastic might not be enough to cause perminit damage, but it is diffenitly enough to cause temporary damage, I have had a scratched eye before and it is torture.
second I thought we went to sealed goggles just encase of an acident, I think there is just as good a chance of someone being injured from a bit of debry going through mesh as there is of someone catching a stray bb with safety glasses.

Forgot to mention why I brought up ANSI/paintball ratings... We don't know what the factory tolerances are with mesh goggles. You might test one that can withstand a bbs, but what's to say another pair doesn't have a weak part in the metal?

Well we can't single out mesh, any goggle for that matter could shatter or break on us, how are we to know that there isn't a weak point? It goes both ways...

As for Gryph's comment, I think it is true that it would have gone right into the wearer's face, although, I know that my controlled reflexes aren't that great, and I'm no goalie or backcatcher, so when something comes flying towards my eyes I close them... we all do it, if someone pretends to punch you right in the eye your natural tendency is to close them. All I'm saying is with mesh there is an increase in the potential of getting something stuck in your eye...

I think you have a better chance of catching a mosquito in the eye on the way down to Busters 2. That hurts like a bastard too! pirat

For those who are willing to take shots at guys who have exposed teeth but not at someone with a wire goggles on there is a definate double standard being held there. Especialy if you are using an upgraded gun. Why are you willing to shoot someones teeth out ( a way higher chance) then to have the slim to none chance that a distance shot directly in the goggles may damage the eye. Anyone shooting someone in the face at close enough ranges to make a BB fragment needs to have thier gun taken out of the game. We have the rule that anyone shooting over 370 with .2 s that make a face shot will not be allowed to use that gun for the rest of the day anyway.

Most of the sealed PB or ballistic goggles we use have holes in the top and bottom plus the bolles have a gap all the way around the lense, Sealed goggles have room for junk to come in to. Has anyone tested these other types of goggles but shooting the holes point blank or shooitng into the gap of the bolles?

The goggles were tested and blow throughs didn't happen. When we tested the BBs didn't shatter and usually don't because of the distance and loss of energy. If you want to ban anything ban cheap .12 ammo on the field.

We could test every goggle by give it a full auto blast all over the lense to test but that would only weaken them. Jackboot if you want to talk about playing the safe side them we should not allow anyone to play that isn't wearing good boots, kneepads and a mouthgaurd.

Teeth can be fixed...

One thing I think we're forgetting about the mesh most of the guys have is they aren't created for airsoft. Horton and GM's have Chain saw mesh masks. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I would tend to think that a chain saw has lots of dust and crap floating around when your cutting, yet they still use these type of goggles. I think the difference between an airsoft made mesh and a chainsaw made mesh would be different...

Mine is made for airsoft, it has a paintball-type plastic face guard and originally had a visor and ear protectors, which I removed.

I think people also need to be aware that while most ballistic goggles may be ansi-rated not all paintball masks/goggles are ansi rated. So they may not stop a 0.2 bb at 500 fps. So if you're willing to shoot at someone wearing a paintball mask that may not stop the bb then what does it matter if it's made of plastic or steel mesh? Personally I'd rather take the chance with the steel mesh that we have proven can stop the bb, rather than a paintball mask which is not ansi rated.

That's not the point... Eye safety is far more important than any of those things. If a tooth gets shot out, it'll cost you in dental work. If you get a bb fragment in the eye, it might cost you some of your vision.
Anyway, decide what you want, but I'm sticking with my ESS goggles. Wink

And yes, I do see your points but I just wouldn't feel comfortable wearing them myself. I've had a few of my KSC bbs shatter at 50-60 ft.

I think we're aware that some people don't feel comfortable wearing them, that's not the issue, personally I don't care whether or not your comfortable. I just wanted to put up some results of a test which were opposite to ours. It was more or less for the other guys who use mesh to see the other side, and that the possiblity of fragments isn't just a rumor...

Some paintball fields require your entire face to be protected and they consider paintball masks mandatory for insurance reasons. Goggles, regardless of ansi rating, would be insufficient. Normally I prefer using my Bolle's but if I have to wear full face protection, I use my wire mesh mask.

I think as long as the users understand the possiblities, they should be allowed to use whatever they wish, as long as it stays with our sealed goggle rules...

all the goggles I use are made for airsoft, the chainsaw mesh had blow throughs so I don't use them. The ones GM has passed our tests and have taken several shots in games with out issues at all.

Mesh has some give in it and BBs tend to bounce off because of that extra play more often in games. Point blank testing is differnet.

PostSubject: Re: Just a thought on wire mesh goggles   Just a thought on wire mesh goggles - Page 2 EmptyFri 21 Sep 2007, 10:33 am

Holy thread revival Batman!!!

Um, yeah, anyways. Just posting here due to recent discussion of eyewear in other thread. Can we all agree on that wire mesh goggles work now? Have we had any incidents with them? Have we tested them with all the newer high fps guns? I think that we can safely say that they work and have the bonus safety feature of not fogging. Any comments or recommended brands (or bad brand warnings)?

the ones from warcraftgames.ca are the best. The Sensia ones don't fit big faces or anyone that has a nose.

To the best of my knowledge there have been no issues with these goggles by those who use them. They were created for airsoft and have proven themselves to be safe. Again it's the debate between what's more dangerous? Someone who is fogged and cannot see where they are going/shooting or someone who wears mesh goggles.

I would go with fogged, though I still dislike mesh, having to walk, shoot blind, and be stupid and remove goggles to wipe them seems more dangerous. It is a shame that we don't have the mesh selection here as they do over in Asia.

PostSubject: Re: Just a thought on wire mesh goggles   Just a thought on wire mesh goggles - Page 2 EmptyTue 25 Sep 2007, 10:41 pm

looking through wire drives me nuts until I see fog's bumping into trees, then I'm in love with my mesh.
I lose alot of clarity through the mesh, i can't seem to spot bits of people sticking out from behind a bush that others can. So there is a visual dis-advantage to mesh. To me anyway.
However, I decided on mesh--because with less than perfect vision to begin with--fogging is unacceptable to me. If I see that there is a set of goggles out there that are sealed yet never fog (and don't scratch and won't cost me my first born) I will probably buy 'em.

One complaint. Mosquitos can get through the mesh and are a pain in the ass once inside. Maybe even worse than fogging. I'll have to pick up some defog for my Bolle's but I'm not sure they'd be much better with the raised lens. Sad

Maybe some kind of insect repellant would be in order. Smile
